Event Description:

Are Our Water Reservoir Dams Safe?

Images of water cascading over the spillways at the Oroville Dam last February and the evacuation of about 188,000 people down the Feather River were compelling and frightening. Would the dam fail and cause extreme damage and death? Fortunately, decisions were made and the dam remained damaged, but intact. It was a close call causing intense engineering, maintenance, construction, and management reviews. Of course political opinions are unrelenting. Repairs are underway while the reviews continue. What has been learned from this almost disaster?

Our guest is Sharon Tapia, Chief of the Division of Safety of Dams in the California Department of Water Resources. She is responsible for the implementation of California's Dam Safety Program that regulates the safety of over 1,250 publicly and privately owned dams in the state. She has over 25 years experience in the Dam Safety Program. She is a registered Civil Engineer with a Bachelor of Science Degree from U. C. Davis.

Please come and learn from this dedicated public official about crisis management and lessons learned.
